What’s The Fuss About Keratin Hair Straightening Treatments?

In 2007, the Brazilian Blowout was introduced. Hailed as a breakthrough for those wanting straight hair, the initial excitement turned controversial. Elevated levels of formaldehyde caused skin, throat and nose irritation to both the stylist and the client.

Today, the story is much different. Reputable salons are now using a very safe level of .02-.05%. While manufacturers are touting “formaldehyde free” formulas, this is really just a gimmick.

But there are formaldehyde derivative formulas. This means the chemical used, such as formulin, is in the same family as formaldehyde but is chemically different and safer.

The truth is your formaldehyde exposure is minimal at best. You most likely get more exposure from having acrylic nails applied. If you’ve ever wondered about the smell in nail salons, well, it’s the formaldehyde!
